COVID-19 vaccinations in Southwest Finland
In the wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland, we follow the guidelines of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (hereinafter also ‘THL’) concerning vaccinations. On this page, you can find up-to-date information about COVID-19 vaccinations and booking of vaccination appointments in Southwest Finland.
If you have questions about vaccinations or want to give feedback, please contact the health centre in your municipality of residence. Alternatively, you can also contact us through our feedback form.
Information on COVID-19 vaccinations
COVID-19 vaccines are generally well suited for almost everyone. The protective efficacy of all COVID-19 vaccines against a serious COVID-19 disease is good.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare recommends at least three doses of the vaccine for all adults and persons aged 12 to 17 that belong to risk groups.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare recommends booster vaccinations for persons aged 12 years and above, whose immunological defence is severely weakened.
Definition of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare: Risk groups for severe coronavirus disease (thl.fi)
We recommend a booster dose for autumn winter 2023 to
- persons aged 65 and above
- persons aged 18 and above belonging to risk groups
- persons aged 12 and above with severe immunodeficiency
One dose of the vaccine is administered. We recommend the vaccine for the target groups regardless of how many booster doses they have had previously, or how many times they have been ill with COVID-19. You can take a booster vaccination at least three months after your previous vaccination or previous COVID-19 infection. A person is given only one dose of the variant booster each year as a booster.
We recommend that you take the vaccine together with an influenza vaccination.

Autumn/winter booster dose after COVID-19
If a person has had the coronavirus disease in the autumn or winter of 2023-2024, they do not need a booster dose this season for protection purposes. The person has received excellent protection against severe coronavirus disease as a result of the disease.
If the decision to administer the vaccine is still made for a specific reason, it is possible to administer the vaccine on an individual basis no earlier than three (3) months after the onset of the disease.
More information
Influenza vaccination and booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine can be administered at the same time.
Influenza risk groups:
- personnel of social and health care as well as pharmaceutical services (participants in the immediate care or maintenance of the client)
- pregnant women
- everyone aged 65 and above
- children aged 6 months to 6 years
- persons belonging to risk groups due to illness or treatment
- men starting their national service and women starting voluntary military service
- people close to those most at risk of serious influenza

Children and young people aged 12 to 17 years
COVID-19 recommendations for persons aged 12 to 17 remain unchanged. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare recommends three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for children and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, who belong to the risk groups. Two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are recommended for other persons aged 12 to 17 years.
Children aged 5 to 11 years
On 23 November 2022, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare updated the COVID-19 vaccination recommendations for children under 12 years of age. The vaccine is no longer recommended for all children, but based on an assessment by an individual doctor, some children may benefit from the vaccine.
Children aged 5 to 11 with a pre-existing disease potentially predisposing to a serious COVID-19 disease may benefit from the basic vaccination series based on individual medical judgement. For other children aged 5 to 11 years, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare no longer recommends the distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations on medical grounds. However, vaccinations do not need to be interrupted, as the vaccination series that have been started can be completed until the end.
Written consent of both guardians must be available in the vaccination situation.
Children aged 6 months to 4 years
Vaccinations for children aged 6 months to 4 years at risk of serious coronavirus infection in children will be decided by the physician treating the child either in a specialised health care unit or in primary health care. The risk groups for children are defined nationally, and more information on children's COVID-19 vaccinations can be found on the THL website.
For more information, contact the doctor treating your child or the municipality-specific appointment and counselling numbers. The vaccination times and places for children aged 6 months and 4 years will be specified on our website shortly.
Written consent of both guardians must be available in the vaccination situation.

Any vaccine, like any medicine, may have side effects. Most of the side effects of the vaccines are mild and temporary.
The most common symptoms after vaccination are local symptoms at the injection site, such as pain, redness, warmth and swelling. Transient general symptoms such as fever reactions, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, irritability, malaise and chills are also very common.
Local and general symptoms usually start within a couple of days after the vaccination. They will disappear in a few hours or days. They can be treated with a medicine used to reduce fever and pain, such as ibuprofen, naproxen or paracetamol. Local and general symptoms do not prevent further vaccinations.
As a precaution, it is recommended to avoid heavy exercise for a couple of days after the vaccination.

You can find more information on COVID-19 vaccines and the coronavirus on the THL website. The website provides information on how vaccines have been developed, what mRNA and adenovirus vaccines are like, and how safe and effective they are.
