The Ethics Committee
The Ethics Committee
The Ethics Committee assesses the ethics of healthcare science research projects of humans, human embryos and foetuses and the observance of the law in these researches and gives statements about their assessments to the applicant.
Researches that require to be processed by the Ethics Committee are defined in the Medical Research Act. In addition, the committee is legally bound to issue statements by the Biobank Act and Act of the Medical Use of Human Organs and Tissues.
The activity of the Ethics Committee of the wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland covers all of the expert responsibility area of Western Finland.
The ethics committee of Turku University can issue a statement on non-medical research, if necessary.

Statement applications
A statement on a new research can be applied either in Finnish or in Swedish. If you are planning to apply on a statement in Swedish, please contact [email protected] .
A statement on a significant change in research, a transfer of samples to the biobank, and a statement on a biobank research can be applied in Finnish.
National Committee on Medical Research Ethics (Tukija) provides ethical evaluations of clinical trials conducted in Finland.
Health care researches from the University of Turku and the researchers from health care units in the Western Finland co-operation area can request personal and free assistance in filling out the statement application and its appendices from the Turku Clinical Research Centre. E-mail: [email protected] .
The ethics committee may charge a statement fee in accordance with the decision of the Regional Board of the wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland (13.12.2022, § 497). The statement fee for a new research plan is 2,850 €, a statement on an amendment to a research plan 900 €, and a statement required for transferring samples to a biobank 2,850 €. The fee will not be charged for statements issued on investigator-driven research carried out without external funding or with funding from a public health care unit, higher education institution, research institute or other public or non-profit organisation.
A form for invoicing the statement should be included to the attachments of the statement application.
