Influenza vaccinations for pupils and students
Influenza vaccinations for pupils and students
Influenza vaccinations are offered to pupils and secondary school students (general upper secondary school [lukio] students and students in vocational education institutions) belonging to high-risk groups either through school health care or public vaccination events. University students and students in a university of applied sciences get the influenza vaccination through the Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS).
Different municipalities in the Southwest Finland Wellbeing Services County may have different practices, so please check the details of your municipality of residence in the municipality menu below.
The vaccine is the VaxigripTetra influenza vaccine. It is an influenza vaccine given by injection.
If you have questions about vaccinations or want to give feedback, please contact the health centre in your municipality of residence. Alternatively, you can also contact us through our feedback form.
- A child who has not received an influenza vaccine before will need two (2) injected doses of the influenza vaccine this year. The interval between the first and second dose should be at least four (4) weeks.
- A child who has received only one injected dose of the vaccine will need two (2) injected doses of the influenza vaccine this year.
- If a child has previously received a total of two (2) doses of any influenza vaccine or one (1) dose of nasal spray vaccine, only one (1) dose is now sufficient. This applies also if the doses have been administered during different influenza seasons.
- If a child has received one (1) dose of nasal spray vaccine, only one (1) dose is now sufficient.
A second dose (2) may be administered when at least four (4) weeks have passed after the previous dose.
Vaccination of a minor child requires the consent of the parents, if the child is not capable of making the decision himself/herself. If the consent to vaccination has been given previously, influenza vaccination does not require a new consent to vaccination.
Children at child health clinic age or at school age
If the egg allergy is mild or regular, and your child has not had a serious allergic reaction to egg, he/she may be vaccinated against influenza normally at the child health clinic or at school. Influenza vaccinations are recommended for children aged from 6 months to 6 years as well as for people at risk of serious influenza complications and the people close to them.
If your child has had a life-threatening reaction to egg in the past and has an adrenaline pen in use in case of a severe reaction, he/she may be vaccinated against influenza, but the vaccination is carried out in outpatient settings and there is a two-hour follow-up period after the vaccination.
Adults
If the egg allergy is mild or regular and you have not had a serious reaction to egg, you will be vaccinated against influenza normally.
If you have had a life-threatening reaction to egg in the past and you still have an adrenaline pen in use in case of a severe reaction, you can be vaccinated against influenza, but the follow-up period is two hours after the vaccination. If you belong to a group of people at risk of a serious influenza, influenza vaccination is recommended. If necessary, contact your own health centre to agree on the time of vaccination.

Students in training, or going to training, in health and social welfare units receive influenza vaccinations primarily from student health care services. If there is no student health care, you will be vaccinated by the health centre in your municipality of residence.
If you want an influenza vaccine, but are not entitled to a free vaccine, contact your own student health care centre or the health centre in your municipality of residence.
Vaccinations against influenza and COVID-19 will be administered in your municipality of residence. The municipality-specific information will be updated as the vaccinations proceed.
